It's a long time since the days when pools came in rectangle or kidney-shapes was the industry standard. Pool design has come a long way and you can find residential swimming pools in designs and shapes that range from those with vanishing edges to waterfall-laced, rainforest themed pools that are reminiscent of the tropics.
Today, if you can imagine a design, it's likely you can find a pool contractor that can design it and a pool construction material that can accommodate it. Even if you chose a traditional shaped pool you can spice it up by adding colorful murals to the bottom and sides. You can also install fiber optic lighting to create a unique ambiance – they are easy to install and maintain. Some homeowners are even installing misting systems that create a subtle fog around the pool and patio area.
Many luxury homes – especially those with a view of the ocean or some other water as a backdrop want pools with the infinity edge (called vanishing or negative edges) those where the pool seems to drop off into thin air.
There are several things to take into consideration before you decide to go crazy with your pool design:
Will the pool be used for relaxation or as a party, entertainment area?
Will the pool be the focus of your yard or will it be part of the natural environment
Will the pool be used for exercise or as a place for the children to play or both?
Will the pool be home to a lot of family and friends or will the circle of people in the pool be a small one?
Think about all of these items before you pick up the phone to get in touch with the contractor. You want to have an idea in mind of how your pool will be utilized so that when you talk to the contractor you can tell him or her what you imagine your pool being and they can help you realize the dream.
Keep in mind, though, if you're looking to install a pool that will come with a high price tag, why not consider the construction for off season when the pool contractor might cut you a deal on the price because it's the slow season.
