There are many ways to make a website - templates, builders, html, flash, etc, etc, etc!
It really depends on what you are trying to do with your website. I actually own hundreds of websites. Some are for my business, some are for other peoples businesses and some are just for fun.
Speaking from experience, you do not want to skimp out on your website...a crappy website will not hold visitors more than a couple seconds and they surely will not buy anything from you (if you are in fact selling something...). People have extrememly small attention spans these days and you have to get their attention quick!
Before you make your website, you need hosting. The hosting company hosts your domain name. You need that too. Luckily, when you buy hosting you usually pick your domain name at the same time. There are so many advantages of having your own hosting Im not even going to name them here, but trust me...Don't use free hosting! You have no control over what happens to your website. I use Hostnine and it starts at $3.95 a month, about the price of a Whopper with cheese. Get it!
Once you have your domain and hosting, you need to know how to make a website. Well, you can do it yourself and it might come out ok, but I suggest you use Elance. Elance is kind of like Ebay, but everything is related to websites. You sign up for a free account and post your job description. So, you can say "Hey, I need a website made for me that looks sort of like this one: www.any-website-you-like.com. Im sure for the right person this will only take a little bit of time. I would like this website completed within 5 days. That's about it!
So, if you like a website like Icarly, just say "I need a website made like Icarly.com". You can give them different pictures and text for the site. Easy as that.
People will bid on your job and you pick the best one. Before they start, you put money into Elances escrow account. For me, many websites only cost $50 and they look awesome! So, I put $50 into the escrow account and once the website is done, they have uploaded it to my domain name and everything works I release the funds.
