Things To Do On The Big Island, Hawaii
Hawaii is not only the name of the chain of Islands in the Pacific that make up America's fiftieth state, but it is also the name of the Big Island. Hawaii is the dominant island in the chain and the name of the biggest island just stuck for the whole chain. But natives tend to refer to the island of Hawaii as the Big Island, Hawaii being the name of the entire state. Whatever you call it - the Big Island, Hawaii, Wow or whatever - there are loads of things to do so you have no excuse to be bored during a Hawaiian vacation.
Touristy Stuff
The Big Island Hawaii is mainly geared for tourism. This includes some of the "touristy" flavored activities that the average person assumes you can do on Hawaii. You can still participate in luaus, still go walk up a live volcano and still girl watch (or boy watch) on the beach. You can dance the hula and wear leis. You can drink little cocktails with umbrellas in them and listen to a ukulele player. There still is a big demand for the "cute" or "quaint" places catered just for foreign tourists in the Big Island, Hawaii.
"Info-tainment"
There are many other places and attractions in Hawaii that engage your brain as well as your tanning cells. Hawaii has many fine museums, educational tours and usual activities. You could take folk dancing lessons, a yoga class, have your fortune read, learn Hawaiian coconut leaf weaving or take a helicopter tour of the islands. This definitely isn't The Brady Bunch episode when they take a trip to Hawaii.
Eco-tourism
The Big Island Hawaii knows that they are home to some of the most unique creatures and plants in the world. They are trying to preserve this with the growth of eco-tourism activities. This is where you go to observe nature and disturb it as little as possible. Kayaking or sailing is less obtrusive on nature than renting a speedboat, for example. There are many places to hike, bird watch, bike, ride horses or go camping. You can even go snorkeling to get close to amazingly colored fish.
Real American Fun
You can also participate in some of your favorite activities such as golf, racquetball and shopping - but you can do it under Hawaii's spectacular weather and scenery, with the smell of the sea never too far away. You can see movies, concerts and eat fine food. Check with the Hawaii Tourist Board for all the latest details.
