You Don't Need A Security Camera To Have A Security Camera Yard Sign

One of the great scams of the 1990's involved making car alarm stickers at home. You'd have to pay for the car alarm sticker making kit and then the company would refuse to pay for the stickers you did make, saying they "did not meet quality standards." This scam was based on a kernel of truth - that car alarm stickers did seem to deter car thieves. This has also extended to home security systems and security cameras. It is perfectly legal to put a "this home is under 24 hour surveillance" sticker on your door or a security camera yard sign without actually having a security camera.

Where Do You Get Them?

With the advent of desktop publishing, you don't need to search very far for security door stickers or security camera yard signs. You just make them up yourself. If you don't want to bother, hire a handyman, out of work carpenter or a hyperactive teenager to make the door sticker or security camera yard sign for you. And, if you go online, you can usually pick up a ready made security camera yard sign for around $25.

You can make up any darn name or logo you'd like. With businesses coming and going like dandelion seeds on the wind, perhaps "Eagle Security" is a brand new security firm you just haven't heard about yet. Stick them in an obvious place in your yard, on a tree or eyelevel on your gate or door.

Keep Up The Act

If you just get a security camera yard sign and don't actually get a camera, don't let anyone else know about it. Letting anyone outside of the family know is really defeating the point. (And if you have a burglary, you can pretty much narrow the suspects down to your family). It's not usually good to get a security camera yard sign if you have small children, because they are horrible at keeping secrets. Either that, or make up a great big fat lie to your kids. Heck, it's for their protection. If you tell them about Santa Claus and The Tooth Fairy, why not an invisible security camera?

And don't get a security camera yard sign of any property that is, quite frankly, not worth breaking into. Don't put any security camera yard signs over any overgrown, collapsed building, for example. And don't put one up on your YMCA room door. The sign's words might as well say, "No security system here whatsoever".
