Whether one serves in some position of leadership (either in business, government, or the not-for-profit areas), or simply, in our day-to-day lives, those that learn the best way to effectively communicate and articulate their positions and ideas, are in the best position to accomplish to the highest degree! We don't get things done by trying to ram what we want down others' throats, but rather, achievement and accomplishment comes from getting others to adopt your ideas, as their own, and, in order to do so, using these eight steps, enhances your possibilities to get a yes, in every situation/scenario.
1. Positive affirmations: What is the message you are sending to yourself? It is challenging to convince others, until and unless, you absolutely believe in what you are saying! What are affirmations? Many thing it merely means saying what you want, but, to properly achieve the best results, these statements must be personally significant (priorities, etc), and must be worded in the present tense. For example, merely saying, "I want to better communicate," is an inadequate approach, but rather, should be stated, in a wording such as, "I communicate and articulate in a compelling, attractive, effective manner." Your affirmations must be recited (read to yourself, in the mirror), at least twice a day, and the list should be composed of ten positive, meaningful statements.
2. 5-Steps: You must know, and feel comfortable with the five steps of addressing/answering any and all concerns/objections. I have written and lectured extensively on this topic, and includes, identifying the true concern, empathizing, answering it thoroughly (and to the satisfaction of others), re-creating the need, etc., and closing.
3. May I make a suggestion?: If the 5-steps alone, do not get the desired yes, use these five words. Ask it as a question, say nothing else, and you'd be amazed that even those who totally may disagree, will politely agree to letting you make the suggestion. However, you must then make sure that your response is compelling to the other person.
4. ZTL: This merely means that once you've made your case, you must be willing and able, to patiently, zip your lip (remain silent). Think of this process as a game, where the only rule is that whoever speaks next, loses the game!
5. Effective listening: Why do you think you were given two ears, and only one mouth? Making your point means learning, as much as possible, about what is most desirable to others!
6. Ask, and empathize: Ask compelling, thought-provoking questions, and get to know things from the perspectives of the listener!
7. Close, and re-close: Unless you actually proceed with a call-to-action, you usually will not get the response you seek. Be persistent, and persevere, by proceeding in a patient way!
8. Your positive attitude: The laws of attraction state that you will attract others when you are positive and attractive in your approaches, body language, ideologies, and intents.
This is merely a summation of the necessities of getting others to agree with you, and to follow your lead! Learn why it feels so good, when you can consistently get that "yes."
