Let's face it, air travel is a mess. The industry itself is experiencing a great deal of turmoil with airlines going bankrupt and others merging just to survive. When you have less airlines to choose from then you start to notice the prices begin to climb higher and higher.
The rising cost of fuel is having a huge impact on pricing as well as many airlines have had to raise their prices just to be able to afford to operate their flights. Most airlines are doing away with things like in-flight meals to cut down on costs while others are even going so far as to revamp their planes so that they are lighter and take up less fuel.
Don't even look at how baggage requirements have changed and the days of the airlines letting people with baggage that is slightly over their limits on flights are over as well. But with all of that you can still find low cost flights and sometimes in places you never really thought of.
In some cases you can find low cost flights by just calling the airlines at least 30 days in advance of your flight but even that is starting to wear off. So how do you find low cost flights?
The internet, of course, is a gold mine of deals and you can find many low cost flights by just searching the internet. But when you buy low cost flights on the internet you want to be careful that you are not getting scammed.
Always confirm any of the low cost flights you buy from an internet vendor with the airline. It is too easy for a shady internet vendor to sell you a bogus ticket and then claim it is the airline's fault. There are plenty of legitimate low cost flights out there on the internet but you should always be careful.
Don't Forget Your Local Travel Agent
Travel agents will buy blocks of airline tickets in advance, way in advance, and sell them to their clients. This is another great way of getting low cost flights. Always check with a travel agent because they may have the exact holiday package you are looking for with low cost flights rolled into it. They may also have just flights for sale that you can benefit from as well.
In this day and age of high fuel prices and consolidating airlines it is hard to still find low cost flights when you need them. But if you take the time to look you can still find deals. Just be sure to check everything out before you commit because you never know when someone is trying to take you for a ride.
