Diamond Grading

When people buy diamonds for jewelry they look at the way the diamond looks on the piece of jewelry before they buy it. It is very rarely that people consider the grading which is used for diamonds. While the diamond grading is not that important for the average person it is the main reason why you will see some diamonds being put for sale as opposed to others.

The diamond grading occurs once the diamonds have been released from their mineral covering and any imperfect diamonds have been kept aside. Once this initial work has been done a gem smith will look to see if there is any trace imperfections to be found. The clarity of the diamond, the color, carat weight and the cut which is possible with the diamond will allow the preliminary diamond grading to occur.

This initial grading will help the gemologists decide which gems stones are suitable for intricate work. The lesser stones will then be used for gem work where the imperfections will not devalue the jewelry. As the diamonds are graded they are placed in piles which will allow the gem stone workers the ability of finding the right piece of diamond to go with their design.

Now before the diamond is placed in a jewelry design it is cut to the shape which is required. The next step is polishing the stone to bring out the inner fire. Once these steps are completed the gem worker will take a final look at the diamond. At this point the cut of the stone will be carefully looked to see if it will fit well in the design. The clarity of the stone will be ascertained as well.

After these steps have been seen to the color of the diamond needs to be seen to. This is because some diamonds like that of black diamonds are not as well known or sought after as the sparkling white ones. The fancy colored diamonds while they may look pretty will not command that much customer demand. As a result of this you can expect to find that the diamond grading for these diamonds places them below that of the regular diamonds.

The final item that is looked at in diamond grading is that of the carat weight. This is very important as this is an item which is generally acknowledged to be an indication of the diamond’s worth. The higher the carat weight the better quality diamond that can be expected to be found.

For this reason when you are looking to buy any diamonds either loose or as a jewelry item you should think of the four C’s with regards to the best diamonds to choose from. These items like cut, clarity, color and carat weight will all help you to see what sort of diamond grading your diamond has got.
