Garage Often Used For More Than Safe Harbor For Family Car

It has often been said that a man's home is his castle but in most homes, the garage is his sanctuary. There are many opinions about what a garage should look like and what its function should be, but in the majority of cases this section of the home does more than provide protection for the family car. It is a place, depending on its size, where numerous tools, equipment and sometimes just plain junk are placed for the lack of a more convenient place for it to be stored.

There are many types and styles of areas often referred to as a garage. They can be attached to the house, built as an entirely separate structure or even as part of the home's basement. Depending on the available land when building a house, some people building their garage, which by default has to be on the ground level, and then add rooms over the garage to create additional family living space.

While in many cases the garage serves as a place in which the car is parked when not in use, in others it is used to store outdoor power equipment, toys and outdoor recreational items are kept until they are needed. Keeping the garage organized is usually part of homeowners daily or weekly routine, but sometimes a garage is so piled with junk that keeping track of it all is nearly impossible.

Size Of Structure Varies By Preference

Depending on the number of cars the family owns, the available land space and the family budget the size of the garage will greatly vary. From just enough room to house one vehicle to one that can hold several vehicles along with other outdoor recreational toys, the size of the garage also helps determine the amount of stuff it can hold. Many claim that smaller garages are more easily kept organized.

An important part of the garage is the type of garage door that helps keep everything inside secure. In addition to the entry door for the vehicle, there is usually a service door through which entry can be gained without opening the larger door. Windows in the door are optional and depending on the individual's need to keep the contents of the garage private, may be filled with wood panels.

In addition to keeping the vehicle secure, a garage also protects it from the weather and, in the case of a garage attached to the house, makes it more convenient when returning home with packages, especially during inclement weather.
