It is extremely important that you protect yourself during sexual relations, not only actual sex but oral sex and anything that involves your and another person's body naked together because even this can spread the disease.
Especially when you have a new sexual partner in your life you need to be aware of their sexual history and protect yourself with condoms, because birth control and other methods of protection will not protect you against STDs.
