Golf Lessons Mean Beautiful Frustration
Golf Lessons Mean Beautiful Frustration
There is nothing in this life more essential, and more frustrating, than taking golf lessons. Golf is one of those games that is very difficult to just pick up on your own and if you can pick it up on your own and be good at it then you better be making millions on the PGA Tour. For the rest of us there is golf lessons and they can be the most humiliating experience of your life even though they don't mean to be. If you don't take golf lessons then you could wind up smacking a ball through someone's window or hitting your best friend in the head with the ball. That is not to say that you are not perfectly able to do those things even after a few lessons but the hope is that some lessons will help you keep the ball straight and out of danger.
For the real hardcore golf student many golf lessons offer the option to have your lesson video taped and analyzed. I think it was Sam Kinison who once warned against video taping yourself doing anything because you "don't look as good as you think you do." I don't think Sam was talking about golf lessons but the saying still applies. Give it some time before you start videotaping your lessons because video taping early lessons and then watching them while the professional sits next to you and tears your swing apart can get demoralizing. So just wait for your close up, your time will come.
Who's Giving Lessons?
You only want to take golf lessons from a certified PGA professional and there are essentially two types of PGA professionals that give lessons. One kind works at a driving range and the other works at a golf course. In my experience you want to take golf lessons from a professional at a course and this is not to say that there are not some fine driving range professionals. There are some very qualified driving range professionals but a driving range professional will never be able to take you on the course to apply your new found knowledge because he or she does not have a course to take you on. Knowledge learned but not applied is wasted knowledge.
So there you have it. Golf lessons are essential to anyone looking to improve their golf game but they can get so frustrating that they can drive you to quit. A good instructor has pretty much seen it all and knows how to encourage you just enough to keep going and take your new skill to the golf course. It isn't until you actually hit the course that you realize that it is pretty much a game of chance and you really have no chance at all.
