The Wonders of GPS Technology
Imagine this, as you are trailing your mountain bike out on the wilderness, you slowly begin to notice that you are getting lost. Luckily, you had with you little electronic gadget that is equipped with the latest GPS technology that tells you where your exact location is so that you will know where to go.
What is GPS?
GPS (Global Positioning System) is a navigation system that utilizes at least 24 satellites that orbit around Earth to determine the current location, pace and course of the receiving unit. The GPS technology is considered as the only Global Navigation Satellite System that is fully functional. The satellites that determines the location, course and speed of the receiver is maintained by the military of the United States of America. The GPS technology was primarily design for military use but was made available for various civilian applications during the 80's. GPS technology has numerous essential applications. It is widely used as a navigation aid all over the world. It is also used for land assessment and various commerce and scientific applications.
GPS technology is one of the essential tools in various air and marine transportation vehicles. Aircraft, boat and ship navigations systems use GPS technology to determine their current location and estimated time of arrival. GPS is also used in automobiles for the same purposes. Hikers, climbers use GPS so that they will not wander off their path. GPS are also used by cyclist to plan their course and determine their location and pace.
How does GPS work?
In order to determine the location, pace and course of the receiving unit, the GPS satellites that revolve around the planet (these satellites revolve in a very specific orbit and revolves the planet two times within 24 hours) broadcasts signal information on Earth. The receiving unit captures this particular information and uses a method called "triangulation" to determine the precise location of the receiver. The GPS technology these days are said to be very precise. As a matter of fact, it is used in the United States to track certain vehicles - that is if you have the particulars.
GPS is used in several military applications, as said before, the GPS technology was initially a project of the U.S. military. GPS is one of the few "dual application" technology that are used these days; which means that it has essential uses for either military or civilian applications.
