When To Start Toilet Training

When you hear your child screaming 'Mommy I did my potty!' these words are going to make you so happy. These are the very words many mothers are yearning to hear from their toddlers but many mothers do not know when to start toilet training their toddlers.

Each child takes its own time to develop and we too should allow the child to do so instead of trying to hurry up the child just to suit our own needs. There are some children who are quite ready to be toilet trained at an early age like say around 18 months. And still there are other children who refuse to be toilet trained even after having crossed the age of two and even three. The age at which the child toilet trains certainly does not reflect on its intelligence in any way.

You must also decide on when to start toilet training based on your child's physical and emotional condition. It is only when the child is physically and emotionally secure that the child is ready for toilet training. However, most experts on childcare feel that the best time to potty train your child is between the ages of 18 months and 24 months.

But there are still some experts who feel that kids below the age of two should not be forced to toilet train as this can have adverse consequences if they are forced. It is a known fact that children can become rebellious if they are made to do something when they are fully not ready to do.

A mother can force a child to sit on the potty for many hours and still the child will not do anything but just sit and this is because the child is just not ready for the potty. But the moment the child is taken off the potty the child would have done his or her potty in their pants.

The important thing before deciding when to start toilet training is that while potty training you must not to use any force but to gently help the child to get used to the potty. Try to make the toilet training experience a pleasant one so that the child will not have problems at all. If you as a mother feel that your child is ready to be toilet trained then do so and do not bother about the child's age at all. You can be sure that the child wants to be potty trained when the child says it wants to do potty or if the child points to the toilet.

Try to put off toilet training of your toddler if you are under any stress or going through difficult times. Only when you are absolutely sure that you are ready with plenty of time and energy on your hands that you should try to toilet train your child.

Toilet training can easily take up 3 to 6 months depending upon each individual child. And it is surely not possible to toilet train a child in just a single day. You could research the internet if you want to know more about when to start toilet training your toddler as there are many useful websites where you can gather lots of information. You can also read the reviews and experiences of other mothers when they began to toilet train their child.
