This is probably because a bigger tank can mimic a freshwater pond or lake better than a smaller one.

No matter how good the water cleaner system one has in the tank, the tendency is that the water will start to have a fishy smell after several weeks. Freshwater tropical fish are also cheaper compared to salt water fish. The fish are also confined to a specific space, which means that you do not need to worry about them making a mess in the house or getting into trouble in the house.
