A little off the beaten path, there are ski areas that can be walked into or you need a four wheel drive vehicle to access these areas. This type of New Zealand ski vacation is probably geared more towards an experienced skier than someone that may need more assistance.

There are tow ropes instead of the sleek chair lifts, and sometimes you may need to hike up the mountain to get to the top. The skiers board the helicopter and then they are taken to a remote location and dropped into the area. At the bottom of the mountain they are then picked up. Often theses out of bounds areas provide not only fantastic skiing opportunities, but also pristine views. One such area that can be found in a New Zealand ski vacation is the Tasmin Glacier area. This allows the skier to enjoy a 12km view of the glacier. It is not only beautiful, but the skiing is uninterrupted. Being able to have a long stretch of good skiing is something that many avid skiers are looking for.
