Cat Grooming Is Not For The Faint Of Heart
Some cat owners are lucky. They have a nice, docile cat that loves to be groomed. Others aren't so lucky. In fact, most cat owners would rather tear their own hair out than try to groom their cats. That's because tearing your hair out would probably be less painful than getting bitten and scratched by their beloved, yet evil, pets. But seriously, cats should be groomed every now and again. It's sanitary, it's good for the health of your pet, and it makes them look their best. It can also be great for you and your household, especially if your cat sheds a lot or likes to scratch your nice furniture.
Grooming Salons
If you don't like the thought of grooming your own cat, it does take a certain type of person, you can always take your cat to a pet grooming salon. The pet grooming salon will bathe your cat, maybe trim its hair, brush its hair, trim its nails or whatever else you want. Then, when you pick your cat up, it's all groomed and it likes you much better than the person who tortured it for an hour or more. This is probably the best cat grooming solution for those who can't see themselves doing it. However, cat grooming services can be expensive so it might save you lots of money to do it yourself.
Do It Yourself
Ok, get ready for an ordeal. The best way to groom your cat is to first bathe it. If your cat isn't declawed, which is good for the cat as declawing is very cruel, it might pay to wear some heavy leather gloves or some other material that the claws won't easily puncture. Bathe your cat in the sink or the tub and then dry him or her off with a towel. You can use a hair dryer on low but don't get it too close and watch out as the noise may scare the bejesus out of your poor animal.
Brush your cat to get rid of any excess hair and now comes the fun part. If your cat isn't declawed, you should always trim its nails. This will save you from getting scratched in the future, it will likely save your furniture and it will also save your carpet in your home. Again, wear a pair of gloves that your cat won't easily puncture. Hold your cat steadily, or get someone else to do it. Some people even wrap their cat in a towel while cat grooming so that they don't squirm too much. Use a regular pair of nail clippers and cut just the tips off. Don't cut the quick, the white part nearest the paw, as this will hurt your cat and it will bleed. Cut the quick and you can bet you won't be grooming your cat anytime soon as it will associate cat grooming with excruciating pain.
If your cat is bad during nail trimming, Try one paw at a time until you get them all done. Wait till your cat is sleeping and try to sneak in a claw or two. Sooner or later, you'll have all the paws done and your cat will be fully groomed. Again, cat grooming is not for the faint of heart and that's why cat groomers get paid very well for what they do.
