Be Careful With Sedation Dentistry

If you are scheduled for sedation dentistry, there a few things you should be aware of. Sedation dentistry is used for special procedures that are too painful to be conducted while the patient is coherent or awake. These include root canals, some tooth extractions, such as wisdom teeth extractions, and more. Before you have sedation dentistry performed, discuss the procedure with your dentist and let him or her know if you have experienced any problems with sedation dentistry in the past. If this is the case, there may be an alternate form of dentistry that the dentist can perform that will be safer for you.

Alternate Procedures

If you need sedation dentistry and you're weary of going under, for whatever reason, discuss this with your dentist. There may be an alternate form of dentistry that can be performed. Instead of going under sedation, the dentist may be able to use a local anesthetic that just numbs the area, or he or she may be able to use nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, which will make the procedure more tolerable. Discuss these options with your dentist if you are at all weary of sedation dentistry.

Allergies

Some may not fear sedation dentistry but their bodies may just not be able to tolerate it. Some people are allergic to the anesthesia. If you don't know, you should be tested before you risk sedation dentistry. If you are allergic to sedation dentistry and you go under, you could have complications and that's definitely not where you want to be. So make sure you discuss this with your dentist before you go under.

The Cost And Insurance

Sedation dentistry can be expensive so make sure you talk to your dentist about how you're going to pay for the procedure. If you can't come up with the funds all at one time, you may be able to make payments. Also, you should discuss any dental insurance you may have with your dentist to see if it will cover the sedation dentistry. Many insurance providers cover these types of procedures and you would save a lot of money if your dentist did accept your type of insurance and those procedures were covered. However, don't skip the procedure just because you can't pay for it. Your dentist would not schedule this type of dentistry if it wasn't absolutely necessary so always listen to your dentist's advice if you want to have a healthy smile.
