What Are Service Dogs?

Service dogs are dogs specifically chosen to render assistance to humans who have disabilities. There are many breeds of dogs that are suitable for service dog training. These include but are not limited to Labradors, Retrievers, German shepherds and many others. The name service dog entails that the dog helps humans in some way. They can be seeing eye dogs, hearing dogs for the deaf, seizure alert dogs, mobility assist dog and many others.

Not all breeds are suitable for service dog training. Some breeds are too small or too big while others are too lively and temperamental. The breeds of dogs listed above are among the top dog breeds which qualify for service dog training.

Service Dog Training Schools

There are many service dog training schools all over the country and the world. Some even give you the option to send in your own dog for specific training depending on what your disability is. This option is very helpful for those who wish to use their own dog as s service dog. The problem with this is that usually service dog training schools choose dogs which come with specific temperament and attitude. Your dog may not fit their requirement but they will still be able to train it.

More often than not, these service dog training schools get their own puppies and acclimatized them to family life by putting them with foster families who are aware of the dog's future role. These foster families try to teach the basic obedience training that all dogs must have before they are given back to the school for proper service dog training.

Obtaining A Service Dog

The way to get a service dog is usually carried out by filling out a form with a service dog training center closest to you. Applicants for service dogs will be evaluated and notified if they can acquire a service dog and when they can get it. Some service dog training centers offer these dogs for free while others have charges. The new owner will have to continually keep in touch with the training facility for continuing education of both owner and dog.
