Steps To Training A Show Dog
Just because you own a dog that is a perfect example of how its breed should look doesn't automatically mean that it will be a champion show dog. Good conformation isn't enough to make a show dog a champion; it takes an enormous amount of training to make a champion show dog. A good dog owner knows what is needed when it comes to training a show dog.
Personality And Temperament
One of the things needed to make a good show dog is personality. When looking for a puppy that will eventually grow into a quality show dog you need to seek a puppy who is friendly and outgoing, because the life of a show dog can be tedious, patience is another personality trait that will help ensure that the dog makes a quality show dog. A willing nature makes training a show dog easier.
Obedience And Manners
Obedience cannot be overlooked when training a show dog. Although the judges at a dog show are suppose to be looking at the dog's conformation they will be unable to do so if the dog is acting like an unmannered clod during the competition. The only way to ensure that the judge is able to make and accurate assessment of your show dog's confirmation the dog has to sit, lay, and lead obediently. If you don't have much experience at obedience training you will want to enlist the services of a professional who is experienced at training a show dog.
Socializing Your Show Dog
If you've ever observed a dog show you probably noticed that the entire show grounds are packed full of dogs, owners, judges, and their families. While the humans are able to understand and deal with the organized chaos the dogs have a more difficult time accepting the new environment. It is important to make sure your dog is properly socialized before introducing your show dog to this time of environment. Make sure that your dog has been exposed to several different dogs and people before you ever step foot on a show grounds. For most dogs a weekly obedience class with other dogs is enough to get it socialized. If your dog needs more exposure to other dogs you may want to consider dropping it off at a dog day care center for a few hours a week.
Reassure Your Show Dog
One of the things you can do to help your show dog relax is to stay close to your dog and not ask someone else to take care of it. You are your dog's greatest source of reassurance. Before you go to the show make sure you put some of your dog's favorite items in the car. It should already be comfortable in a crate and having a favorite chew toy or pillow will help give your dog a sense of home. It also helps if you have a blanket to cover your dog's crate and isolate it from the outside chaos. Remember that dogs are sensitive animals and that your dog will take its cues from you. The more relaxed you are the more relaxed your dog will be while competing.
Don't Forget The Fun
On of the most important things to remember when training a show dog is to have fun. If you and your dog aren't having a good time during the training process it is unlikely you will enjoy showing. Also remember to be patient, losing your temper while training a show dog will not do you or your dog any good.
