Bull dog: the frowning yet friendly breed

Colloquially identified as British bulldog or English bulldog, bulldogs are medium-sized dog breeds that originally came from England.

Appearance

Bulldogs are stocky breeds that have short and compact body and sturdy limbs. The shape of this dog results to their unusually typical gait. A bull dog is widely known because of their prominent short muzzles and saggy skin on their face, apparently creating that "frown". This is the bull dog trademark.

The Bulldog breed comes in many colors and preferably; they have short and smooth coats. The sole disqualifier for this breed during dog shows is their liver-colored nose yet bull dogs that are black coated are also not chosen.

In America, the typical size of a mature male bull dog is approximately 50 pounds while for the adult female, they are around 40 pounds. In United Kingdom, the bull dog male breed standard weighs 55 pounds whereas the female weighs 50 pounds.

Do bull dogs have bully temperaments?

Ironically, Bull dogs are not bully breeds but they generally stay docile, sociable and friendly. Being fiercely loyal is one of their pleasant characteristics. The breeders of this kind of dog have worked in breeding aggression out thus; bull dogs are known to have usually good temperament.

A bull dog can get so fond of his considered family and home that most of the time it will not wander outside without any human companion. Because of their pleasant nature, they are not perilous to children. Bull dogs are suitable for apartments and houses because of their energy and size although puppies can be vicious until they achieve maturity.

Bull dog Health

This dog breed is prone to many health issues. Breathing issue is one common problem because of their lower jaw shape and muzzle shortness, thereby bulldogs snore. In some parts of the UK, bull dogs are susceptible to interstitial cyst, a cyst that forms between their toes. This causes discomfort although it is treatable. Other health problems of this breed include certain allergies, cherry eye and hip issues.

When a bull dog is born, they are delivered through Caesarean section due to the disproportion of their head to their body, although some give birth too naturally and effectively.

Moreover, bull dogs need exercise to control their weight because if they gain such, it well lead to heart and lung problems. They are also particularly sensitive to cold and heat.
Bull dogs have become a popular mascot of several American universities. They are also a famous England symbol, all for its tenacity. Today, they are also one among the famous dog pets in homes all over the world.
