Everyone knows that regular physical activity is vital for good health, but sometimes it's so hard to get started in an exercise program. Many people feel they can never keep up the pace of the people around them in the local gym, or maybe they know they won't look like that supermodel on television as she promotes the latest fitness equipment. Physical fitness is more than a state of the body; it's really an attitude in the mind. Choosing to be physically fit is an option that is available to everyone, but we first need to make some realistic goals. A lifetime membership in a health club won't automatically get you in shape, but there are some real ways to achieve physical fitness in your daily life.

Real Life Ways to Physical Fitness

Physical fitness can start in small steps -literally. A walk around your neighborhood or a local park can be a great beginning to a fitness program. Many people automatically assume that to achieve a state of physical fitness they need to spend a lot of money on equipment. That's not true. Incorporating small yet practical activities in your daily life will add up to significant health benefits.

There are many activities around the home that can be considered "exercise". Vacuuming, washing the floor or changing curtains will stretch your muscles. Hiding the remote control will give you many opportunities to get up from the couch and walk to the television. Cutting the grass, raking leaves or planting flowers are wonderful outdoor activities that will give your body a workout while getting some sunshine and fresh air at the same time. Walking to a local store to pick up a quart of milk or the newspaper is an excellent way to get in some exercise time. Perhaps your dog would like a walk?

If you work in an office, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park your car in the farthest spot in the lot and get in a little extra walking. Spend your lunch hour at a park, eating a nutritious meal and then taking a slow and gentle walk. If you spend a lot of time on the phone, get up and move while you're talking. If your job requires a lot of typing or time at the computer, flex your feet and leg muscles often to improve circulation.

On the weekends, or when you're off from work, choose some fun activities to provide exercise. Is there a sport you enjoy? Tennis, badminton, golf and swimming are popular pastimes. Sometimes it's easier to achieve physical fitness when you have a friend encouraging you. Joining a gym or teaming up with someone in an activity will give you social interaction and motivation to continue.
