Looking at a particular guitar tab, you just might find the numbers 1 through 6 at the left side of the tab. When learning how to read guitar tabs, just remember that these 6 numbers represent the 6 strings of the guitar. #1 is actually the bottom string on your guitar, which actually gives the high E pitch. This is actually the thinnest string on your instrument, and is the one that is the closest to where you would input your jack. That is, if you are using an electric guitar.
The #2 string is the one located directly above the #1 string, and it represents the B string. The #3 string is directly above the #2, and it represents the G string. The #4 string is above the #3, and it represents the D string. The #5 strong is above the #4, and it represents the A string. The #6 string is above the #5 string. It is the thickest string of the pile, and it represents the lower E pitch.
There would be other numbers to take note of when you're learning how to read guitar tabs. For starters, when you see a "0", this is actually an open string. You play the string without touching any fret at all. And where the "0" appears should indicate the string that you should play. So, if the number 5 should appear on the #4 string, then what would this mean? This means that the fourth string should be played, and you should press the string on the fifth fret from the head stock of the guitar.
