You can equate the price of gourmet pet food with the price you might expect to pay for lean, tender cut of beef for the dinner table. While not everything that costs a lot will be worth what you pay, in most cases the gourmet pet food will be higher than the regular store or generic brand.
There is also nothing wrong with offering gourmet pet food on occasion, but do not be surprised if the pet develops a desire to only have the good stuff. After all, if you think of them as your family, would the humans want hamburger every day with an occasional steak thrown in, or would they prefer the prime cuts in their regular diet? Consider the taste of the food as well as the nutritional values when choosing gourmet pet food to make sure you please their taste buds as well as their dietary needs.
