Still Using Custom Antique Baby Furniture Today
My brother has two children and I remember going to his house once and watching him feed his youngest it what looked to be an old high chair. My mother was there and as I asked my brother about the high chair my mother indicated it was the one that we used when we were children. I thought that it looked older than that and that is when my mother told me that she was fed in that chair when she was a baby as well and her mother too.
That would have put that chair at over 80 years old! But it gets better. Turns out the chair was made in the late 1800's by hand as a custom job for someone in my family and has been passed down ever since. That is the beautiful thing about custom antique baby furniture, it can be handed down as a family heirloom for many generations and you can just tell by looking at it that it has a lot of character and probably a lot of stories to tell.
This piece of custom antique baby furniture was in great shape and it made me think about other custom antique baby furniture and I wondered what would be the inspiration for someone to buy custom antique baby furniture in this day and age of computer aided manufacturing and precise engineering.
It turns out that in many cases custom antique baby furniture has been shown to last a lot longer than the stuff that is made today and many parents like the idea of purchasing a piece of custom antique baby furniture and then being able to hand it down to their kids when the time is right. Sometime after that trip to my brother's house I was helping my mother clean out her basement and we saw the other high chair that was used to feed me and my brother. It was made when I was born and was in absolute pieces. There is a lot to be said for the quality of custom antique baby furniture.
They Just Don't Make Them Like That Anymore
