Redefining Bonsai Seeds
Bonsai seeds are actually just ordinary tree seeds that may have been contaminated with Apiosporino Colinsii. This is a fungus that attacks the genes of the tree thus recreating the entire genetic code of the tree and maybe producing dwarf specimens similar to bonsai trees. These are rare bonsai seeds because trees that are affected with this fungus rarely produce seeds. In actuality, all other bonsai seeds are just ordinary tree seeds which grow up the same until you cut the tap root and control the root growth.
The main point of bonsai gardening is to control the growth of the tree by cutting and pruning the roots once in a year or more. Regular pruning of the branches and buds will also keep the size of the tree in check and maintain the small nature of the bonsai tree. Bonsai seeds can also be gleaned from fruits that the bonsai tree will bear but almost all of these will grow up to be normal sized trees.
Popular Bonsai Seeds Sales
Most bonsai seeds sold are those from the deciduous trees and conifers. These make easy to grow and easy to maintain bonsai trees. Most seeds labeled as bonsai seeds will also have some form of instruction on how to cultivate them into bonsai trees. The popular kinds of bonsai seeds are usually bought by novices and beginners who prefer to grow their own trees. Not all beginners have this notion, though and some buy saplings or seedlings which are already somewhat grown enough to be pruned and cut into bonsai trees.
In spite of the misunderstanding that some bonsai seeds will grow into bonsai plants when they mature, only those infected by the fungus will be smaller than normal size. Other seeds labeled as bonsai only means that these can be made or cultivated into bonsai plants by the practice of bonsai cultivation. Other reasons why a normal tree seed may be smaller than your average tree species can be because of seed malformation and deformation of the seed or restriction of root growth.
You might like to purchase tree seedlings and saplings instead of bonsai seeds since the seeds may take some time to grow and not all will actually make it to seedling or sapling stage. Seeds from bonsai trees will not yield bonsai plants when planted. It is highly unusual for bonsai plants' fruits to produce seeds that will grow up to be bonsai plants unless properly crafted to be so.
