Christmas ornaments are usually small Christmas decorations that are hung on the Christmas tree. There are so many things that can be made into Christmas ornaments that the possibilities are endless. These decorations can also be varied versions of Christmas symbols and icons made by enterprising manufacturers to entice people to buy their products. Ornaments are usually made from plastic, resin, china or glass even though many other materials can also be used to make them.

The practice of hanging ornaments and Christmas decorations on trees has been around since the pagan times. In fact, the practice was adopted by the Church after December 25 was declared as the birth date of Jesus Christ. Christmas ornaments then were not called Christmas ornaments but just things that were hung in trees to appease the gods and to invite favor from them. Fruits, flowers and other colorful items were usually hung on trees before the introduction of Christianity to some European countries.

Common Types of Christmas Ornaments

Some of the more common Christmas ornaments that are consistently hung in Christmas trees are bells, balls, miniature wreaths, figurines, toys and many others. The Christmas ornaments can also be hardened cookies or even popcorn threaded together to create a garland. Any idea for an ornament can be made if you persevere and make it. Some ornaments are made from natural materials while many are made from plastic or metal.

Bells and balls are very commonly found ornaments in Christmas trees. These things can be hung plain or with many other embellishments on them to create a more festive spirit. The usual embellishment for ornaments is glittery things that come in the traditional Christmas colors like red, gold, silver and green.

In keeping with tradition, many people put up their Christmas trees right after Thanksgiving or maybe even earlier. Christmas ornaments are also hung in the tree to make the tree look more festive and alive. The size of the Christmas ornaments must correspond to the size of the Christmas tree. Small ornaments will be engulfed by a larger tree while large Christmas ornaments will dwarf a smaller tree. It is better to be familiar with the size of your tree before you go out to buy ornaments for it.

Christmas ornaments can be passed down from generation to generation and each can tell a story. Your honeymoon ornament, your grandmother's heirloom ornament, your first baby ornament, your first Christmas in your own home ornament and so on.
