The Main Three Types
Power hedge trimmers that are electric are normally a lot quieter than the gas models and they also provide a smoother operation, meaning less vibrating qualities. No fuel needs mixing and an electric-based motor powers the trimmer which is operated through either an electrical cord or a battery.
Electric-based power hedge trimmers are best for smaller yards with hedges and bushes that are not overly thick and wild. With the corded version, the trimmer will operate as long as it is plugged into an electrical power source. Of course, with the corded version you are limited by the length of the cord (and extension cord if used) while with the battery-operated version, you are limited by the life of the battery.
Gasoline-based power hedge trimmers are heartier, typically with a two-cycle engine that requires both mixed fuel and oil for operation. As there are no cords or batteries to encumber your movements to they can be used virtually anywhere there is a hedge or bush that needs trimming. With gas trimmers, you can tackle heavier jobs as well as handle an increased work load because the engines are not likely to overheat, unlike electric models that are not made for excessive, prolonged use.
Making your Decision
Choosing from the three main types of power hedge trimmers should be fairly easy if you can assess your current landscaping and lawn care needs. If you have a small yard with few hedges or bushes, then electric based power hedge trimmers are what would suit your needs. However, with larger lawns and bigger hedges or bushes, your needs would best be taken care of by gasoline power hedge trimmers.
