Landscaping needs are varied and diverse. Stones for landscaping are numerous and even loose stones are used for this. These stones are smaller than boulders and are often smooth and well rounded due to water exposure.

Ponds utilized stones as fixtures placed in the water around the water formation to make it look more authentic and natural. Stones are commonly taken from the riverbanks of riverbeds since these are well shaped and look naturally smooth.
Other uses for stones for landscaping are as low walls. You have the choice of using smaller pebbles or stones bigger than your fist for these structures. The smaller river stones can be integrated into the cement mixture, usually darker stones work well for these types of walls while the bigger stones can be placed one at a time into the wall using cement. Using stones for landscaping is very beautiful and can have a cooling effect. There are also some man made stones made to look very much like natural ones available in the market today. These man made stones come in sections of about one square foot each or larger. Although, many prefer the natural stones for landscaping, the environmental impact or quarrying, especially in rivers, need to be addressed. Quarrying alters the river and the riverbed.
