How Do Pond Filters Work?
There are basically three types of filtration devices and mechanisms. There is biological filtration which performs by introducing beneficiary bacteria to the water where fish waste, unprocessed fish food and other decay is broken down by beneficial bacteria that convert the waste into less harmful toxins.
The second type of filtration is known as mechanical filtration. It removes suspended particles from pond water through the use of a mat that traps the harmful particles within the mat. This requires more maintenance for finer particles because the mat will not trap 100% of all particles.
The last type of filtration is chemical filtration. In this process, the chemical Zeolite absorbs ammonia and purifies this toxin as it becomes exposed within the pond water. The only precaution for Zeolite is not to add any type of salt containing products as it causes the Zeolite to release the ammonia toxins back into the water.
Mistakes to Avoid when Choosing a Pond Filter
Do not neglect the true size needed for your pond in selecting your pond filter size. This would result in dirty, unhealthy pond with constant filter clean-up. Always oversize the filters so your pond will be clean both economically and ergonomically.
The Types of Filters Available for Purchase
There are four basic types of pond filters available on the market. The first type is known as Up-Flow Pond Filters. This type of filter requires the least amount of maintenance and is a very efficient product.
The next type of filter is called the pressurized pond filter. It is easy to install and popular for small and medium sized ponds. Most can be buried to the lid for easy concealment. They do however require more frequent maintenance unfortunately.
The third type of filter is known as Gravity-Flow Biological Pond Filters. It is generally low maintenance and performs efficiently in majority of sizes. The only downside is it is harder to hide and use above a waterfall or stream.
The last type of filter is called the Submersible pond filter. It is only efficient in small ponds. They are easy to install and conceal. The filter must be removed before cleaning and may require you to enter the pond.
Advantages and Disadvantages to Good Filtration
The advantages of good filtration are the pressurized filters, large sponge filters, and Biofalls filters. These filters are the best by mechanical means; they are inexpensive, easy to service and simple to attach. They are also easy to conceal within the pond.
The disadvantages of good filtration filters are that of the pool style sand filters and the barrel style filter. These pond filters are poor mechanical filters because they are hard to conceal and are overpriced for their functions.
