Self Hypnosis: You Can Do It Yourself!

Hypnotherapy has proven to be successful in treating a variety of ailments, from post traumatic stress disorder, to nicotine addiction, to management of pain during childbirth. You may be wondering whether you can use self hypnosis to change problem behavior instead of going to an expensive hypnotherapist.

Is All Hypnosis Self Hypnosis?

It has been said that all hypnosis is self hypnosis, because the subconscious must adopt all suggestions as its own before positive changes can occur. Thus, under this theory all suggestions made during the suggestible phase of hypnotherapy are self suggestions, and all hypnosis is, therefore, self hypnosis.

First, Consult a Hypnotherapist

Before attempting to hypnotize yourself, you really should undergo at least one or two sessions with a licensed or accredited hypnotherapist. Tell the therapist up front that self hypnosis is your goal. Therapists are realistic; they know that not everyone can afford a lengthy course of hypnotherapy, and you should have no problem finding a hypnotherapist who is willing to work with you to establish a self hypnosis plan, with follow up visits set every six months or so.

A hypnotherapist should all know how to teach the craft of self hypnosis, because hypnotherapy clients are usually encouraged to use self hypnosis to overcome unhealthy urges between therapy sessions. Or you may find that you wish to complete all your sessions with a hypnotherapist - studies show that most common problems amenable to hypnotherapy can be alleviated in about five sessions.

You Can Hypnotize Yourself

You might be surprised at how easy it is to use self hypnosis to manage a smoking addiction, weight loss problem, a stress problem, or to manage chronic pain. Once you have undergone a hypnotherapy session with a trained hypnotherapist, you will have a good idea of how to set up your environment. Find a quiet, dark room where you can rest, become completely at ease, and let go of your tensions and distracting worry thoughts.

As your mind relaxes, you suppress your inhibitions since you don't need them in this safe, relaxed state of mind. Without these inhibitions, your mind is more open to new suggestions, changing to a state where it is ready to receive the information it needs to effect real changes.

Thus ends the self hypnosis session; however, the process continues during a fully conscious state. This change-compelling information, like a seed, cannot be ignored once it is embedded in the unconscious mind. The mind will act on the information, driving change in the individual that would not have been achieved without self hypnosis.
