Many homeowners simply cut their grass to a height that looks god to them or hire a lawn care service company that cuts the grass to the homeowner's specification. Many do not realize that by cutting the grass too short, or leaving it too long can actually minimize the grass's impact on the environment. It can also make the use of pesticides, fertilizers and water be inefficient providing too much or too little in the way of clean air lawn care.
Providing clean air lawn care is about more than using a mower with less pollution or cutting the grass less often. It is also about providing an environment with less pesticides and chemical fertilizers to maintain a health, green lawn. Typically, lawn care experts recommend that during the growing season no more than one third of the blade of grass be cut at one time. Of course this can change if the time between cutting is longer sue to the weather, but as a general rule it will help keep the grass growing better.
In most cases, by limiting the length of the clippings, it will reduce the need for raking them up, allowing them to settle into the top layer of mulch, providing fertilizer for the lawn. In practicing clean air lawn care this can help reduce the amount of fertilizer needed for the lawn.
Cleaning The Thatch Keeps Air Flowing To The Roots
On every lawn, the clippings as well as small branches, loose soil and other materials can build up on top of the soil and it is this layer of thatch that can block the air from getting to the grass as well as keep water from flowing into the roots. With clean air lawn care the thatch is loosened to allow water and air through while leaving a protective layer in place that help hold in moisture and prevents erosion.
The type of grass used in the lawn will help determine the length to which it should be cut. Typically, longer grass that is cut longer than three inches will tend to lie down without being cut, giving the lawn an uneven appearance. Cutting it too short will make it appear less full in places. With clean air lawn care, the grass should be cut between two and three inches, to allow for better air and water flow and fertilization with the clippings.
