There are two basic types of severe headaches - (i) primary headaches that are the result of external stimuli and not an inherent disease; and (ii) secondary headaches that are the direct result of some underlying disease. Severe Headache As Primary Headache Manifestation

2. Migraine - this is one of the most dreaded severe headache known to humans. This type of headache is very often accompanied by other symptoms such as vomiting, acute nausea and inability to bear light or sound.

3. Cluster headache - this is a rare type of severe headache, which is characterized by pounding headache throughout the head. Fortunately, there is a very small percentage of people who fall prey to this type of severe headache.

The secondary headaches are also a major reason for severe headaches. However, in this case there is a possibility of healing whatever is the problem (disease) which would mean curing the headaches as well. Some of the diseases that cause acute secondary headaches are brain tumors, sinusitis, meningitis, Parkinson's disease, and many such others.

At the first glance there is nothing that would tell that these severe headaches have any inherent problems, yet these could be very dangerous. This is why instead of medicating yourself with over the counter (OTC) drugs; you should consult a doctor as soon as you experience even one such a debilitating headache. Correct and timely treatment would be able to check the pain effectively plus identifying what exactly was causing it, which might give you the possibility to eradicate the headache altogether from the very roots.
