DVD rental services
Movie rentals are one of those great, old, American traditions. The invention of the VCR was a huge technological breakthrough. A lot of us take DVDs for granted nowadays, but think back a little bit. It really was not all that long ago when the only movies you could watch were in the theaters. Private video screening was a privilege reserved exclusively for the rich. Home movies changed all that forever.
Nowadays, we are on the edge of another breakthrough. Although DVD rentals have been around for a long time, online video rentals are still something pretty new. It is a really great thing, if you ask me. A lot of video stores really have a pretty limited selection but thanks to the Internet, you don't have to be limited by it at all. You can download movies online or rent them over the Internet, and see all but the most obscure films almost anytime you want to. You don't even have to worry about returning them on time. You simply stick them in an envelope, drop them off at the corner letter box, and you are all done.
Of course, online DVD rentals are not for anyone and everyone. They have their strengths and their weaknesses. The strengths of online DVD rentals is that they tend to be cheaper, you keep the movies for as long as you want to, you do not have to go to the video store, and you have a huge selection of films to chose from. The disadvantage, of course, is that you don't really have your choice of when to get the movies. When you use Netflix, Blockbuster online, or some other DVD rental service, you put your movies on a queue. There is a sort of waiting list for the films. If they aren't in right away, you might not get to see them for weeks.
For me, online DVD rentals are great, but will never replace the corner video store. Getting a DVD rental ahead of time is not always a possibility. Som
etimes, there is a movie that you want to see, and you want it now. It is always nice to have that luxury. Still, for most purposes I use Netflix. It has even more movies than my local video store, and I usually don't mind waiting a week or two. When I get impulsive, however, it is always nice to be able to take a trip down to the local video store. .
