Information on Solar Energy
We get most of our energy from the sun and refer to this energy as solar energy. Solar energy is advantageous for a number of reasons, namely because it is a renewable source, meaning that it will never run out, at least not until there is no more sunlight, and also because it does not produce any air or water waste as its counterparts do.
A solar collector is the most common device used to collect heat from the sun, and works by allowing the sunlight inside the material, absorbing the sunlight and changing it into heat, and trapping the heat inside. Solar space heating is a term which refers to using solar energy to heat the inside of a building, and passive solar homes are those in which the entire house is actually acting as a sort of solar collector.
There are a variety of different ways in which this solar energy can be used, and namely it is used to heat water and air. Water heating is considered as being the second leading home energy expense, and so by switching from your present energy source to solar energy, you will be saving yourself a great deal of money. Depending on where you live and how much water you use on average, your solar water heater could be paid off in as little as five years.
Solar energy is also used for electricity, and there are two ways to generate electricity from solar energy, one involving photovoltaics and the other solar thermal systems. Photovoltaic or PV cells are made of two thin slices of silicon sandwiched together and attached to metal wires, and once the two layers are placed together, an electric field is produced that prevents the electrons from traveling from the top layer to the bottom layer.
Solar thermal systems can be used in place of these PV cells, and most solar thermal systems use solar collectors with mirrored surfaces in order to concentrate sunlight onto a receiver that heats a liquid. These systems are typically one of three types: central receiver, dish or trough.
Advantages
There are a multitude of advantages that are offered from this solar energy, and for one it is much better for the environment than any other known source of energy. Because it is simply harnessing the sun's rays to produce energy, there is no waste or harmful gases produced as a result, and so the environment stays clean and fresh.
