Effective Strategies For Improved Reading Comprehension

Everyone wants to be able to better read and understand what he or she is reading. Knowledge is power and the key to that power is to gather information. The only way you can effectively gather useful information is to increase your reading comprehension. So what are some strategies for improved reading comprehension? Some strategies for improved reading comprehension seem pretty obvious while other strategies for improved reading comprehension may seem odd but are still effective. There are exercises you can do as strategies for improved reading comprehension and they only cost you the price of a newspaper.

A very effective strategy for improved reading comprehension may not seem like it will work but it is both effective and very obvious. Each and every day pick up your local newspaper and read as many articles as you can in the national and international sections. You can use the local section if you like as well but not everyone has a lot of time to read the paper every day. As you go along reading the paper highlight the words you do not know the meaning of and make a note of how they are used in a sentence. When you are done reading the newspaper get out your dictionary and look up the words you highlighted. Learn the meaning of these words and look at how they were used in the sentence to give you a better idea of how the word would be used. It may seem basic but this could be the most effective strategy for improved reading comprehension that you ever employ.

It's In The Words You Say

When you read a book read it out loud. Make sure you are not in a library or anywhere that you will annoy people but make sure that every once in a while you read out loud so you can hear yourself read. Believe it or not there are words and phrases that you say every day, or that you have heard used, that you may have never seen on paper before. It sounds odd but it is true and if you read out loud and you come across a word or phrase that looks odd, if you say it out loud you just may recognize it.

Reading comprehension is a skill that is developed over time but once you start to implement better reading skills you will notice that your comprehension skills increase greatly. Employ some of the tactics discussed here and see if your comprehension increases. Increased reading comprehension can only serve to better your communication skills in every day life.
