Reading And Writing Together In Integrated Reading Strategies

Integrated reading strategies are learning programs that combine learning to read with learning to write in order to help the student better associate the two and increase literacy. Integrated reading strategies are extremely popular at the grade school level because integrated reading strategies help the student to not only understand better what they are reading and writing but they also help the student to increase reading and comprehension speed which can increase the amount of reading a student does.

There is nothing more difficult than trying to learn something without being able to get your hands on it and really understand what makes it work. An integrated reading strategy can really help increase literacy because the student can begin to see where the words and sentence structure actually comes from as opposed to just having them magically appear on the page. Integrated reading strategies also help students to see a page as a group of words as opposed to one word at a time, which can become very handy when teaching the skill of speed-reading.

Say It Out Loud

For younger students an integrated reading strategy should also include an oral component where the student says what they are reading out loud. Integrated reading strategies are very hands on types of lessons that get all aspects of human communication involved. Only when the student can understand and appreciate the relationship between words and their meanings and their use in written communication can the real process of learning to read begin. Communication is not just one thing but rather successful communication consists of being able to utilize verbal, written, and reading comprehension for it to truly be effective.

This technique is also used in speed-reading to help students increase their speed along with their comprehension. The ability to see an entire page as opposed to one word at a time is a skill developed through years of intense learning and can be considered a very advanced communication skill. But no matter how advanced you are your learning of how to communicate always begins with the basics. An ability to master the basics of all aspects of communication is essential for any student and if the student has aspirations of being able to read and comprehend all material at an advanced rate then they first need to understand the basics as everyone else understands them. To communicate is to convey a sense of power and effective communication is very powerful.
