There is Such a Thing as Table Tennis Blades

Table tennis has the reputation of being one of the most popular varieties of sports in the world today. In fact, when talking about table tennis in the Eastern parts of Asia, some of the world's best table tennis players could be found there. Just as with all popular sport types, there are a number of terminologies used in table tennis. In the varied terminologies involved in table tennis, there are a number of terms which comprise the table tennis world denoting one thing to another. One such not so often used term would be that of table tennis blades.

History notes that table tennis, before becoming a mainstream sport, was popularly played by the Victorians of 1880 Europe. They practiced table tennis as a form of after dinner entertainment, recreating a tennis scenario in an indoor environment, scaling down a tennis court to facilitate a tennis match between friends and or family members. Since there were still no commercially available table tennis blades and other table tennis equipment back then, everyday common household items were utilized to facilitate the course of a table tennis game.

Items like books were used as nets, while a knot of string, or the cork of a bottle was used as a table tennis ball. The lids or covers of cigar boxes, and even thick enough books, were used as table tennis blades, in the advent of table tennis as a sport. Eventually, due to the popularity of the game, manufacturers geared up in selling more defined table tennis equipment.

The discovery of using celluloid novelty balls in a table tennis game paved for the development of the now standard table tennis blades which are being used in table tennis games today. Table tennis blades, paddles or rackets are basically pieces of wood shaped like a paddle, having a handle, and then layered either on one or two sides with rubber.

The rubber on these table tennis blades, or rackets, enable a player's ball handling capacity, thus its value as table tennis equipment types. As table tennis equipment, table tennis blades take the most definitive of the sport's varied classes of equipment types.
