The Energy Source of Spells
If you've seen fantasy movies or read fantasy novels, you will notice that some of the characters use magic to do things, to solve puzzles, and even to fight enemies. Judging on their capabilities, it is unlikely that any normal person would be able to do such things.
What these characters did was casting magic spells. Spells are spoken words or form of words that are said to have magic power. They are spoken words that form a magical enchantment of some sorts. Spells are part of magic, a conceptual system that stresses out a human's ability to control the natural world using mystical, paranormal, or supernatural means
According to fiction, spells are some of the most powerful tools that are at the disposal of wizards. Through spells, one can charm a person, learn the secrets of the forgotten, invade a person's mind, or move objects by a few uttering of words.
Even in fiction, the casting of spells is not really understood. According to most fiction, to draw on magical energy, the wizard must shape exact and specific mental patterns. To do this, he studies a spell book. The spell book contains patterns, diagrams, mathematical formulas, etc., that are alien to normal thought. He then memorizes these patterns.
The patterns stay in the wizard's mind as potential energy. Once the spell is needed, he releases this energy through a combination of words, gestures, or components. Once the spell is cast, the mental patterns are erased from the wizard's mind. Therefore, if he wants to cast that same spell in a later time, he must spend time to study the spell book again.
In the real world, there are other explanations which are also plausible. Supporters of the existence of real magic believe that spells work due to the following principles.
1) Natural forces that science cannot detect, given our present technology. These magical forces are believed to exist alongside with fundamental forces of nature such as gravity and electromagnetism.
2) The intervention of spirits. Many adherents to magic believe that spirits exist in a natural but magical world. The residue or the magic that keeps them existing can be used to cast spells.
3) The existence of a purely mystical power such as mana or numen. This power is outside the realm of the natural. Sometimes, adherents say, these powers can be contained in a magical object such as a stone, charm, dehk, or ring which a magician can use and manipulate.
4) Manipulation of the elements. This involves using the will of the magician with the aid of symbols or objects that symbolize the element. These elements are usually the four basic ones-earth, air, water, and fire.
It is important to know that no one was ever reported to have cast spells.
