Dollar Rent A Car got into the car rental game a little late, but became successful enough to grab the attention of one of the largest corporations in the world. Through a series of business relationships and dealings, the Dollar Rent A Car company now finds itself in a unique position in the car rental world. There are over 350 Dollar Rent A Car locations in the United States and Canada along with a total of over 650 being located all over the world. They pride themselves on offering not only top notch service, but on also being one of the more web savvy companies in the car rental business.
Company Beginnings
Dollar Rent A Car got their start in Los Angeles in 1965 and made its corporate offices right in the Los Angeles area. It was a little late to the game considering that Avis had started almost 20 years earlier in the same exact market, but Dollar Rent A Car managed to develop its own marketing techniques (and service levels) that not only appealed to business customers traveling through airports, but also to the vacationing public as well. They grew rather fast as they caught the very tail of the rental car wave that carried so many of today's well known companies to international success. Then another event happened that took Dollar Rent A Car to a whole new level.
Enter A Detroit Powerhouse
In 1990, Chrysler Motors was looking to expand its newly created Pentastar Group which was created to be a network of rental car companies. Chrysler figured that if people were renting their cars all over the world, then they would be more inclined to buy their cars when it was time to purchase. It was a brilliant idea, and to make up their new Pentastar Group Chrysler purchased Thrifty Car Rental, General Car Rental, and Dollar Rent A Car.
Thrifty was left to its own brand name because it was an already established brand but General was not so lucky. Dollar was considered the predominant brand name, so most General had to change their names, and in some places merged with the Dollar agencies already in place.
Now Dollar Rent A Car is one of the larger rental car companies in the world offering only Chrysler vehicles. It is a smart piece of marketing done by Chrysler that has paid off over and over again.
