Pots and Pots of Orchids
Pots and Pots of Orchids
One of the most ancient plants known to man, the orchid, continues to be very popular as a table flower and special occasion flower. However, it has a unique history and the thousands of varieties now available may actually not tell the full story of the orchid. You can now find pots and pots of orchids for sale all over Europe, North America and Asia. In truth, the unique lifecycle of this plant stands it out from most others.
Through some mechanism, the plant species has learned to develop smells and appearances that attract the very insects that are needed to pollinate the plants to help them grow seeds and survive. This simple act of nature has long been the reason for much studying of this plant. As you observe the pots and pots of orchids lined up for sale, you most likely will see a precession of various pollinating insects visit the specific pot of orchids they prefer.
Orchid Life and the Pots
The life of the orchid is perhaps not very different from other plants. However, a pot of orchids is simply more open to the public than most plant pots. It is the plant version of the film star. Pictures are taken of it all the time and all stages of its maturity are openly discussed and debated in societies across the world. It is not surprising then that the orchid pot is somewhat misunderstood as a vehicle for the plants' splendor - but that is a different story.
As any other plant would, orchid life starts out as a very light seed in a pod that is cast to the wind. In the wild this seed is very lucky to survive. In captivation many growers actually claim nearly one hundred percent in germination percentages. That is perhaps a stretch of the imagination. But more has been written about a pot of orchids than most plants and there are many stretched facts in the millions of words written.
And so the plant grows. Typically it is allowed to get to about a foot high before the process of thinning begins. As it grows most orchids will prefer their own pot. This means that the orchid grower has pots and pots of orchids. They grow many thousands of plants of all types and hence there are lots of orchid pots in most grower's greenhouses and growing areas. It is a shame that most of these orchid pots are all the same, but it is understandable, otherwise they may take away from the beauty of the flowers themselves.
