Infertility is a condition where an individual in unable to contribute to conception. The individual can be male or female and may have had difficulty or no success at all in trying to conceive a child in over a year's time. There are a multitude of causes of infertility but in most males, infertility focuses mainly on the production of sperms. Some of the causes of male infertility can be reversed while others are really innate in the individual.

Psychological Effects of Male Infertility

The effects of male infertility are not only physical but psychological and social. In some couples the need to conceive may become paramount and pressure both individuals. This adds t the stress and dysfunctional aspect of the marriage. The pressure to conceive can take away the romance in the act of lovemaking and can become almost clinical in the need to time it well. Eventually, frustration and the pressure to have children can lead to the breakdown of the marriage.

In the case of the male who is infertile, he suffers the stigma of not being a "man" or a man who lacks something. Even if he refrains from announcing it to the world, his wife would know about his male infertility. He might have doubts regarding his wife's sincerity towards him and her understanding regarding his condition. The process of male infertility treatment can also be stressful for the man and can put considerable stress on their marriage or relationship as well.

In some extreme cases where the couple or the male individual does not like to have children, male infertility can be a boon. It takes out the continuous process of contraception and gives free rein to the couple. This is a very liberating aspect of their relationship and can bring them much closer to each other.

Social Impact Of Male Infertility

In the aspect of society, male infertility can be an issue which the man can avoid indefinitely. He might also feel withdrawn when this topic is raised even if he is not the one being put under the spotlight. Constant thinking and avoidance of male infertility subjects will lead to a strain in some of his relationships because the man might not want to open up regarding this issue and others might see it as a withdrawal from their friendship.

The aspect of male infertility and the individual's reaction to it depend on the point of view. For some it may be a blessing but for most men, it can be a heavy burden to bear.
