DVD Writer Compatibility with Blu Ray Discs
Blu Ray has somewhat become the buzzword when talking about the latest in optical storage format technologies. Geared to replace the ever popular DVD, Blu Ray discs stand to "out-store" DVD discs by one to five, as the contents of five standard DVD discs could be stored in one Blu Ray disc.
DVD discs could store up to 4.7 gigabytes of data, with dual-layer DVD discs capable of storing up to 8.5 gigabytes of data. With Blu Ray discs, data reaching up to 25 gigabytes could be stored into one Blu Ray disc, with dual-layer Blu Ray discs capable of storing up to 50 gigabytes.
With such impressive storage capacities, questions regarding DVD writer compatibility with Blu Ray discs have come up and about. Bottom line, standard DVD writer compatibility with writable Blu Ray disc formats would be none, as Blu Ray utilizes a blue hued laser in its successful operation. The blue laser, which has a lesser wavelength, makes the possibility for more precise data reading to happen, making DVD writer compatibility rather hard to achieve.
DVD writer compatibility with Blu Ray discs would therefore be nonexistent, thus.
Blu Ray discs come in formats similar to that of most DVDs and CDs. There is the BD-ROM class of Blu Ray discs, the BD-R and the BD-RE class of Blu Ray discs as well. The BD-ROM format of Blu Ray discs is the read only type of Blu Ray discs, similar to the format type of DVD-ROMs and CD-ROMs. They are the perfect medium for the distribution of High Definition movies, as well as large file storage demanding computer applications, and games for personal computer systems and/or gaming consoles with Blu Ray support. The BD-R is the writable or recordable class of Blu Ray discs, in which users could easily store backups of their High Definition movies and/or personal computer data types. The BD-RE is the rewritable class of Blu Ray discs, meaning users could record/write data, use the written/recorded data, then erase, and reuse the same disc again.
Blu Ray players have no problems in dealing with Blu Ray discs, as they are designed to work with Blu Ray discs. They would also have no problems in dealing with standard DVDs as well as with HD DVD discs and regular CDs. Standard DVD players though, wouldn't be able to read Blu Ray discs, as a different reader is installed in them, one which isn't geared to work with Blu Ray discs. Again, standard DVD writer compatibility with Blu Ray discs is nonexistent.
