Some priests believed that coffee was the drink of the devil and the devil created it for the Moslems since they were not allowed to drink wine. The priests believed that Christians consuming coffee might lead to eternal damnation. It is believed that in the late fifteen hundreds, Pope Clement VIII decided to investigate this devil beverage and he was actually captivated by the pleasant aroma of coffee and took a sip.
The story goes that the Pope thought coffee was a tasty beverage and therefore he actually blessed the beverage and baptized it. Reportedly he believed that forbidding Christians to drink coffee would be a sin. Due to the blessing of the Pope, coffee was being imported to Italy and western countries and soon coffee houses were built.
