The Most Popular Styles Of Coffee Tables
Has there ever been a more versatile piece of furniture? Whether used as the centerpiece for your living room to gather round with friend, or as a side table to be used for storage and functionality, coffee tables have become wildly popular since their conception in Britain in the 1800's. There are literally hundreds of popular styles you can choose from when it comes to putting a coffee table in your home.
Wooden
The oldest and most popular type, those made out of wood can be integrated into almost every décor. These tables come with a variety of woods and styles, and are by far the most durable. Wooden coffee tables are most popular in woods like oak and maple, but you can also find them in pine, hickory, and cherry wood.
Some of the more popular styles of wooden tables include mission style, where the table generally has a lower shelf for storage; cocktail style, which generally has several drawers for storage, and is often placed against the wall instead of in front of a sofa; and ottoman style, which is a table typically covered with leather or some other such material.
Contemporary
Contemporary coffee tables are far more common now than they used to be. These tables often incorporate materials such as glass and metals into the design. Certainly not for use with any décor that is more traditional, these coffee tables are more commonly found in homes that incorporate a post-modern style of decorating. While certainly stylish, contemporary coffee tables are not nearly as sturdy or durable as their wooden counterparts, and shouldn't be used in homes with small children and rambunctious pets.
Unique Styles
But lest you think that your choices for coffee tables end with the traditional and the modern, coffee tables can be quite unique as well. (Ever seen one of those hideously ingenious wagon wheel coffee tables?). If you are a creative type, then you can turn most anything into a coffee table. Look around your home to see what odds and ends you may have lying around that you can turn into a coffee table.
Coffee tables only need to have a large flat surface on top, and be sturdy enough to hold a fair amount of weight. As you can see, there are many different types of coffee tables you can choose from for your home. With so many choices, you'll be hard pressed not to find one you like!
