The first of the basic home security tips is to make sure that, after you move into an apartment or house for the first time, that you change the locks. It seems so obvious but more people move into new homes and get broken into because they never changed the old locks and the old owners were able to just walk in. The first thing you should do when you buy a new home, the first day you move in, is install new deadbolts and door locks in every exterior door on the house. If you are renting a new apartment then install your own locks and give your landlord a copy of the keys. Any good landlord is going to understand that you are changing the locks and you may want to discuss this with a new landlord before you even sign the lease. Do not allow landlords to change locks for you, always insist on changing your own locks.

Going On Patrol

Now that you have all of these new locks installed the next best home security tip is to make sure you use them. Lock your doors whenever you leave the house and always lock all of your locks, including deadbolts, when you lock up for the night. Make sure only the very necessary people have copies of your keys and always know who has a key to your house. You should always try and give one copy of your house keys to someone you trust for emergencies but beyond that keep your keys to yourself.

Make sure your property is well lit. Do not allow there to be any dark corners or dark stretches at night because you never know what can happen and you can never know who is hiding in the shadows. Always be careful and always be safe.
