A Helping Hand: Identity Theft Task Force

Identity theft has become a popular crime in recent times. Before, this crime was not that well known and seemed to happen only in television and movies. But today, anyone could be a victim, as well as anyone can be a suspect. That's why the government has already taken measures to stop this illegal doing.

A Specialized Task Force: The Identity Theft Task Force

Due to the rising incidences of identity theft, the government has made a special task force to specialize on the problem at hand. This is called the Identity Theft Task Force.
The Identity Theft Task Force of the President was established during May 10, 2006, by E.O. 13402. This marked the launching of a new era for the battle against identity theft. Knowing the heavy emotional and financial toll that the crime requires of its victims, coupled with the brutal burden it also places on the country's economy, the Identity Theft Task Force was created.
It was President Bush who coordinated and called for approach along with different government agencies in able to fight against this crime.
The Identity Theft Task Force operated in such a way that it crafted strategic plans that aim to make the efforts of the federal government more efficient and effective. They targeted different identity theft areas such as prevention, awareness, prosecution and detection.
To meet such demand, the Identity Theft Task Force, that was chaired by the Attorney General and was co-chaired by the Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, decided to focus on specific areas like law enforcement, education, and government safeguards.
Law Enforcement
They examined the different tools of law enforcement and how they can use it to prosecute, investigate, and prevent identity theft crimes. They also used this to regain the proceeds of such crimes. Lastly they used this to ensure effective and punishment of the identity thieves.
Education
The specialized Task Force also surveyed existing education efforts of government agencies along with the private sector about how corporate citizens and individuals could protect their personal data.
Government Safeguards

Safety first! Because the government should help reduce, rather than aggravate the already existing problem of identity theft, the Identity Theft Task Force worked with various federal agencies to settle on how the government could increase its safety measures to enhance the security of personal data that they and the private sectors hold.
Thus, with the task force at hand, Identity Theft criminals would want to think twice before even doing their crime, since they now know that someone would be running after them.
