A wonderful holiday movie is famous for saying that it is not for money alone that one spends a lifetime building up a business, it is to preserve a way of life that one loves. Many small business people put their entire lives into making their business successful and business identity theft can bring all of those dreams crashing to the ground.
It could be said that business identity theft is a far more cruel crime that personal identity theft because when you are running a business it is sometimes very difficult to keep track of everything you did, or your employees did, in order to prevent business identity theft. One day you get a report from one of your vendors that someone order thousands of dollars worth of equipment under your company name and you realize you have been the victim of business identity theft.
Then you panic because you wonder how deep this incursion goes and just how badly your company will have to suffer from this business identity theft. Identity theft is the folly of cowards in any form but business identity theft is a special kind of devious.
Many small business people combat business identity theft by making the prevention of business identity theft the task of their financial employees. If they have a CFO then that person is responsible for making sure no one makes off with the company's good name and credit.
If they do not have a CFO then they may hire an outside firm to keep watch for them hoping that the outside firm is not so corrupt that they will begin to engage in business identity theft. The world of business is cutthroat enough and when you add this new element to it then it can make doing business very complicated.
Keep An Eye On Your Business
Unfortunately due to the increase in business identity theft the only real thing a small business owner can do is make sure they make it a priority to track and monitor their business activities and keep an eye out for anything suspicious. Where small business owners used to work 12 hours a day now they can add another hour or two to try and keep up with these white collar cowards.
It takes a lot to run a successful small business but unfortunately it does not take a lot to bring that business down. Make sure your company is safe from business identity theft and don't you let your dreams be destroyed.
