Don't Become An Identity Theft Victim
You may think that your identity is safe but you had better wake up. Anytime you use a computer or one of your credit or debit cards, you are potentially handing sensitive information to a hacker. Hackers can get personal information such as social security numbers, credit card numbers, birth dates and even your mother's maiden name, which some companies use for identity verification, all with a few presses of a button. However, there are other ways that you can become an identity theft victim as well, such as if someone steals your mail. The bottom line is to be careful and always watch what you do.
Online
Whenever you're online, to prevent from becoming an identity theft victim, always make sure the site is secure if you are inputting personal information. If you are on a strange computer, always make sure you log off when you're finished. For example, let's say you go to the library and you use the computer there to access your banking information. Then, you walk away without logging off. Someone could easily come along and steal your identity. Then they can get credit cards in your name or, worse, they could buy a car in your name. Don't become an identity theft victim. Always watch your steps while online.
The Mail
If someone were to get a hold of your mail, they could easily steal your identity. This can happen to anyone so there's not really much you can do to prevent from becoming an identity theft victim through the mail system. However, you should always pay close attention to your credit report. If something shows up that you don't recognize, such as a large amount owed to a car company for example, contact that company and tell them you've become an identity theft victim.
There are other ways to prevent becoming an identity theft victim. Invest in a good shredder and shred all documents that have personal information on them. All someone would have to do is go through your garbage to steal your information. So shred everything. A good shredder is not expensive and it can drastically reduce your chances of becoming an identity theft victim.
If you have become an identity theft victim, call the police and contact the three major credit companies. Experian, Trans Union and Equifax can put a flag on your social security number so that if anyone tries to get credit in your name, they'll call you. It's a hassle if you ever try to get a line of credit because they'll have to contact you to verify that it is you, but it can prevent you from becoming a victim in the long run.
