Speculating on the Nintendo Wii DVD Player Option

Owners of non-Wii gaming systems have long enjoyed the extra feature of being able to play DVD movies on them in addition to having separate DVD players in the home as well. Currently there is no official Nintendo Wii DVD player out yet but the company had high hopes of releasing a new model with this DVD capability in the latter part of 2007. To date, Nintendo is still trying to keep up with the global demand of the original Wii gaming system, much less releasing a newer DVD-enabled version.

Is it Even Being Released?

There is a lot of speculation in the gaming industry from both experts as well as users as to the likelihood that the Nintendo Wii DVD player version will come out any time soon. As mentioned before, the company still has not caught up with the demand yet for the original system version. Plus, there is talk that this new DVD gaming model is being delayed due to worrying about DVD piracy and how easy it would be for hackers to exploit this new feature.

According to a leading software manufacturer that produces movie playing and movie making software, they have been contracted by Nintendo to come up with a viable software plan for the Nintendo Wii DVD model. The drawback to the software being created for this new Nintendo Wii DVD gaming system is that it cannot be used as an upgrade to the original existing systems. Internal components have to be reconfigured to be able to play both Wii games disks as well as DVD movies.

Does the Public Even Care?

Right now, the focus is not on the possibility of a Nintendo Wii DVD player and gaming system but rather getting the original version. Demand is far greater than the supply so the company is continually shipping out units to retailers to meet the demand. The majority of Wii gaming system owners already have a DVD player for movies, whether it is a stand-alone or part of another competing gaming system.

Most people could care less about the Nintendo Wii DVD option because of their exiting DVD players that are working just fine. Of course, there is always that small contingency that wishes they could get the Nintendo Wii DVD option because they like have no DVD player capabilities with their other electronics; however, this is few and far between.

The bottom line is that Nintendo does plan to release the Wii in a new and supposedly improved DVD player version. The question is, how popular will it be over the original Wii gaming system, and when do they actually plan to release it?
