Martial Arts that Teach Street Self-defense

People may have different reactions when faced with life-threatening situations on the street. People normally escape and seek for the escape routes that could guarantee them safety from the attackers. However, in a situation where the attacker is proximate and engages a surprise blow, the victim will have no choice but to fight back or be helpless. The likelihood for survival can be greater to those who fight back than those who are stunned and have nothing to do.

Street violence is rampant in many urban areas. People can be victimized by robbers and assailants on the streets. The victims can be men and women, old and young. Safety on the streets is always an issue. More and more people regard street self-defense relevant for possible survival over life-threatening situations on the street.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art developed in Brazil by Mitusuyo Maeda, a Japanese immigrant in the South American country. The martial art is derived from Japanese' Judo. The Gracie family brought the techniques of the martial art to the Western world. The Gracie's were the first ones taught by Maeda about the martial arts.

Meanwhile, Dan Inosanto is also notable for being the instructor of several well-known martial artists such as Brandon Lee and Paul Vunak.

With the encouragement of Dan Inosanto, Paul Vunak founded a martial art organization, the Progressive Fighting Systems. Paul Vunak's organization is dedicated to instructing realistic self-defense including the street self-defense. The organization also promotes JKD as well as the Filipino Martial Arts.
