Stun Batons and other Electroshock Self Defense Weapons

Today, a self defense weapon is one thing many people have come to arm themselves with when going out from the safety of their respective homes. In these times, it pays to be prepared, as one just can't predict what waits around the corner. Self defense weapons are practical items to have, as they are items geared to provide self defense measures against would-be assailants with intentions of causing harm to others.

Stun batons would be such examples of self defense weapons.

Basically, stun batons are electroshock weapons, which are used in subduing persons through the administration of an electric charge, which has the capacity to stop superficial muscle functions. Other examples of electroshock weapons would include electroshock guns or tasers, stun guns and electroshock belts. Stun batons belong in the direct contact class of electroshock weapons, as one needs to administer the electric shock charge directly on contact. The Stun gun and electroshock belt would also fall into this category of electroshock weapons. Electroshock guns and tasers, on the other hand, have the feature of being able to fire projectiles which would then administer an electric shock.

Stun batons use a temporary high-voltage, low-current discharge in their successful operation. The charge from a stun baton is enough to override a body's muscle-triggering mechanisms, resulting to great pain for those in direct contact with them, with some stun baton charges even causing momentary paralysis. Upon stun baton administration, muscles are known to uncontrollably twitch, resulting to those hit with stun batons to look like they are having a seizure. As stun batons are designed for self defense, the relatively low current which is exposed to those hit with stun batons are considered to be within the "margin of safety".

The construction of stun batons, as well as with other electroshock weapons, is fairly simple. The direct or alternating high-voltage discharge of stun batons may be produced by one, or more, standard nine volt battery, utilizing a system based on an oscillator, resonant circuit and step-up transformer or capacitor voltage multiplier systems. Without external "load", the output voltages of stun batons range between 50 kV to 1000 kV. The stun baton voltage common range would be between 200 kV to 300 kV.

Being in contact with a stun baton for even half a second is enough to cause intense muscle contractions and intense pain. Three seconds of being in contact with a stun baton would daze subjects, dropping them to the ground. More than three second stun baton exposures would result to complete disorientation, overpowering potential assailants, thus completing the stun baton's function as a self defense weapon.
